A Decent Homes Standard in the private rented sector - Consultation

Following on from the Government’s proposals within the White Paper ‘A Fairer Private Rented Sector’ the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has consulted on the possible introduction of a Decent Homes Standard in the PRS. This CLA consultation response sets out the CLA’s views on any new Standard. In particular, the Standard must not be duplication of existing legislation, must not pose a threat to heritage or traditional buildings, and must be meaningfully enforced but without overzealous penalties and punishments. We also comment on the importance of bespoke attention being paid to the variety of housing and tenancies in rural areas and urge caution of policymaking with an urban-centric focus.
