Succession Alliance exists to help families navigate exactly that.

Working with a skilled facilitator, families come together to identify what matters most to each person, explore priorities openly, and agree a way forward that everyone can own. Succession Alliance does not replace the solicitors, accountants and other advisers families already trust. Instead, it works alongside them, creating the clarity and consensus that makes technical advice easier to act on.

The service is open to any CLA member facing questions of succession where there is land, a business or assets to pass on, and a family that needs to agree how to do so.

The Succession Alliance works with a network of approved facilitators who are selected for their experience in working with farming and rural families, and their ability to be constructive when conversations are difficult.

The Succession Alliance’s Facilitated Family Meeting is a structured process that draws the whole family together, identifies what matters to each individual, and closes with a written action plan agreed by everyone in the room. The service includes:

• Pre-meeting conversations with key family members to explain the process, answer questions and put people at ease before the day itself.
• A full Facilitated Family Meeting – up to a full day – attended by all family members and their partners or spouses.
• A written report sent to all family members after the meeting, summarising the discussions and setting out the agreed actions, timescales and who is responsible for each.
