Devon Branch Chairman's Report 2026

As I write this, we're only just into July, yet as I look across the fields each morning, they already have the appearance of late summer. Across much of Devon, prolonged hot weather and a lack of meaningful rainfall have left grass growth under real pressure. For a county where livestock farming forms such an important part of the rural economy, it is a timely reminder that some of the greatest challenges we face remain beyond our control.

Unfortunately, the same could also be said of the political landscape. At a time when rural businesses need confidence to invest and plan for the future, Westminster has once again entered a period of uncertainty.

As Andy Burnham takes up the reins as Prime Minister, our call is simple. The countryside needs consistency, practical policy and a genuine understanding of the contribution that farming, land management and rural enterprise make to our economy, environment and national food security.

Members continue to navigate changing agricultural policy, taxation, planning reform and environmental regulation, all of which make long-term investment and succession planning increasingly difficult. Too often, however, rural policy is developed without recognising the wider role our countryside plays. Farming is about far more than producing food. Rural businesses support tourism, care for our landscapes, create employment, enhance biodiversity and help sustain the communities that make rural Britain unique.

If government wants to strengthen food security, improve the environment and grow the economy, then rural businesses, farming families and countryside communities must have a genuine seat at the table.

The CLA continues to champion that message through constructive engagement with ministers, officials and MPs, ensuring Devon's voice is heard both regionally and nationally.

What gives me confidence is the ambition I see across Devon. From family farms embracing diversification to young people bringing fresh ideas and new skills into the industry, our rural economy continues to evolve. Innovation has always been one of farming's greatest strengths, and I believe the next generation will play a vital role in shaping a productive, environmentally responsible and economically vibrant countryside.

As this is my first AGM as Chairman, I would like to thank our Branch President, committee members and the CLA South West team for their support over the past year. I hope many of you will join us at Thorne Farm in September to share your views, hear about the work being carried out on your behalf and help shape the future of our Branch.

The weather may remain beyond our control, but ensuring the countryside has a strong, informed and united voice is something we can influence together. I look forward to seeing many of you in September.
