Prepare for network upgrades
CLA Energy Services advises on the impact of upcoming changes to the electricity gridBritain’s electricity grid is being upgraded at pace to move more clean power around the country. That’s positive long-term, but it also changes how some network costs are recovered on bills.
What's changing
- From 1 April 2026, the transmission standing charge (TNUoS “residual”) is expected to rise, and many suppliers recover this as a per-site cost.
- If your contract runs past April 2026, check whether elements like TNUoS are treated as pass-through even on “fixed” deals.
- New links and reinforcements should reduce constraint costs later in the decade, but not immediately.
Why this matters for CLA members
- Portfolios with multiple meters or uneven use sites could see more impact because standing charges apply per meter/site. Tidying dormant or duplicate MPANs can avoid paying for supply points you don’t use.
- If you’re planning new loads (cold stores, irrigation, workshops, EVs) or new sites, the timing and location may change your future non-commodity costs.
How CLA Energy Services can help
- Bill clarity - We can walk through a recent bill so you can see what’s fixed, what can move, and what April 2026 could mean - useful for budgeting.
- Contract sense check - We can highlight any April 2026 pass-through exposure so there are fewer surprises mid-term.
- Portfolio tidy - We can help you spot dormant / duplicate MPANs or unhelpful set-ups so you’re not paying standing charges you don’t need.
- What-ifs you can act on - We can compare one or two simple options (e.g., consolidate meters before April 2026; plan the timing of a new load) so you can choose the lowest hassle next step.
