Known collectively as Protected Landscapes, England’s ten National Parks and 24 National Landscapes (formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Beauty or AONBs) cover around 25% of land in England. CLA members operate rural businesses across all 34 Protected Landscapes, which are unique in their challenges and opportunities.

Protected Landscape Boards are responsible for deciding what actions should be taken to deliver the purposes of National Parks and National Landscapes. There are 30 positions available across the country, with different Protected Landscapes requiring a slightly different time commitment between one to four days a month. Applications close at midday on 19th May 2025, and you can apply online here.

The ideal candidate is someone with a passion for the work of National Parks and National Landscapes and who recognises their importance for nature, climate, and rural communities. We know that many CLA members share that passion and are familiar with running rural businesses within Protected Landscapes. Often Protected Landscapes are seen only as tourist attractions, which fails to acknowledge the huge range of businesses operating within their boundaries, from traditional farms to tourist enterprises to one-of-a-kind diversifications. As a board member, you would be able to represent land managers while furthering the Protected Landscape purposes of promoting the conservation and enhancement of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage, while also supporting the public enjoyment of the area.

With the introduction of Protected Landscapes Targets and Outcomes Frameworks in early 2024, and an announcement of plans to review the National Park legislation in December 2024, the role of Protected Landscapes is changing. It’s therefore more important than ever that land managers and rural businesses are represented on decision making panels.

If you are passionate and committed about wanting to help shape the strategic direction of policy and on the ground delivery, and ensuring the landowning voice is heard at board level, then the CLA would strongly encourage you to apply for the vacancy.
