Last week, the CLA issued a call to action for all major retailers to end the sale of disposable barbecues, in an effort to mitigate the risk of wildfires in what is one of the driest years on record.

Marks and Spencer were first to respond to the CLA's call, and now all major retailers have followed suit, in order to protect farm land, rural businesses and communities.

CLA President, Mark Tufnell, said: "On behalf of the CLA, I am pleased to see that as a result of our campaigning that all the large supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda and Aldi have followed Marks and Spencer's lead on this crucial measure. Removing these blatant wildfire risks from the shelves is clearly the responsible thing to do, and I am grateful to each of them."

During this period of prolonged lack of rainfall, record temperatures during heatwaves and wildfires damaging the countryside, policies such as this which can mitigate potential further fire damage are sensible and necessary

Mark concluded by saying: “During this period of prolonged lack of rainfall, record temperatures during heatwaves and wildfires damaging the countryside, policies such as this which can mitigate potential further fire damage are sensible and necessary. We warmly welcome people to the countryside as they seek to enjoy the glorious weather. But we ask them to help us protect farmland and natural habitats by not lighting barbecues, fires and other potentially hazardous materials such as sky lanterns.”
