South Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) open for consultation
Professionals, landowners, farmers and anyone with specialist knowledge or interest in the natural environment can give their views on South Yorkshire's LNRS consultation. The LNRS sets out a long-term plan for restoring and connecting nature across South Yorkshire while supporting thriving rural communities, productive farmland and climate resilience. It will help guide future investment, funding opportunities and partnership working across the region.
Local Nature Recovery Strategies are intended to support local planning authorities in preparing local plans who have a duty to have regard to the relevant strategy for their area (Natural environment - GOV.UK). The LNRS may be a material consideration in planning decision-taking.
The draft LNRS was developed over the past two years through collaboration between South Yorkshire's local authorities, Peak District National Park, Natural England, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency and many other environmental organisations, landowners, farmers, businesses and community representatives. More than 1,800 contributions have already helped shape the draft strategy through workshops, public events, farmer engagement sessions and online participation.
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is inviting farmers, land managers and rural businesses to help shape the final South Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) and they are now inviting you to review the draft strategy and help shape the final version before it is adopted later this year.
The deadline for responses is Friday 31 July 2026, and the consultation can be accessed via https://southyorkshirenaturerecovery.co.uk
SYMCA particularly welcome your views on:
- Whether the proposed priorities and measures are realistic and practical for different farm types
- How nature recovery can support productive and resilient farm businesses
- Any local opportunities, challenges or barriers that the strategy should better reflect
- What support, funding and partnerships are needed to turn ambition into action
CLA Members in the South Yorkshire Combined Authority's catchment who have any queries about this consultation are encouraged to contact the CLA North Advisers by telephoning 01748 90 7070.
