Waste crime concerns

Landowners continue to pay the price for fly-tipping

The CLA is frequently lobbying for greater deterrents and punishments to tackle fly-tipping in all forms.

An area of significant concern where our work has made the headlines recently relates to the number of incidents of processed waste being dumped on our members’ land.

The waste, which is often referred to as ‘trommel fines’, can include plastic, glass, rubber and other detritus, with the size of the fly-tips frequently equating to many tonnes.

CLA East Director Cath Crowther has raised concerns in the regional and national media about the issue. You can listen to a report on BBC Farming today here >

One member to have suffered a recent incident is Tom Streeter who farms on the Essex-Hertfordshire border.

It is thought up to 40-tonnes of trommel waste were dumped on his land this month after locks on a gate were broken to gain access to a field growing lucerne. It is the second time this year that he has suffered an incident such as this.

The CLA has raised its concerns with the Environment Agency and would like to hear from members who have experienced similar incidents. Please get in touch via east@cla.org.uk
