Trees for Climate Funding in Nottinghamshire

Funding opportunity for land managers in Notts
Green Canopy

The Trees for Climate programme offers some of the most competitive grants currently available for woodland creation, delivered locally via the Greenwood Community Forest. It is part of the national Nature for Climate Fund and aims to significantly expand woodland cover while supporting landowners to enhance their land, diversify income, and contribute to climate action.

What Support Is Available?

Generous grant funding:

  • Grants can cover up to 100% of planting costs, including site preparation, trees, guards, planting labour, and fencing where needed.
  • Landowners can receive 15 years of maintenance payments, providing long‑term financial support for establishing and managing new woodland.

Free Professional Support:

  • Forestry and land management experts from the Community Forest team provide:
  • Site assessment and design
  • Species selection
  • Planning and delivery support
  • Long‑term management guidance

Carbon Income Opportunities:

  • Nottinghamshire County Council is registering newly planted woodland under the Woodland Carbon Code, enabling carbon credits to be generated and sold or reinvested. This demonstrates how landowners could also benefit from future carbon markets.

Local Partnerships:

  • The Greenwood Community Forest and Sherwood Forest Trust are working together to deliver 250 hectares of new woodland in Nottinghamshire during the programme period.

Is Your Land Suitable?

Land is potentially eligible if it:

  • Is in or near the Greenwood Community Forest area
  • Is available for tree planting for the long term
  • Has low existing ecological value (grassland, arable, poorly performing fields)
  • Meets environmental screening criteria (checked by the programme team)

The scheme is flexible and can accommodate:

  • Whole‑field planting
  • Wood pasture
  • Shelterbelts
  • Riparian buffer planting
  • Community‑access woodland
