New chair elected for CLA Staffordshire

15 July 2014

Sarah Baugh, a Partner in FBC Manby Bowdler’s agriculture and rural affairs team, has taken up a two year tenure as Chair of CLA Staffordshire Branch Committee.

Sarah, who has been with FBC Manby Bowdler since 201,2 has a long history within rural affairs having provided specialist advice in the area for over 16 years. She led the agriculture team at her previous firm for five years and has been a professional member of the CLA for 15 years - having served on the organisation’s Staffordshire Committee for the last five. She is currently three years in to a five year term on its National Legal, Parliamentary and Property Rights Sub Committee – a separate role to her Chairmanship of the Staffordshire branch.

Speaking of her appointment, Sarah says: “Having been involved with the CLA for many years now, it is important to me to be able to work with and be genuinely involved in the issues that matter to those living and working in the rural community.

“My role as Chair means that I’ll be in a position to ensure that local members are heard at a national level and I’m very much looking forward to ensuring that the issues of local importance are understood nationally.

Amongst the issues of key importance to the CLA in Staffordshire are the rollout of rural broadband; the routing of the HS2 train line; and reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Senior Partner at FBC Manby Bowdler Niall Blackie, concludes: “The work of the CLA is enormously important to those working within a rural environment and to have one of our team holding the position of chair in Staffordshire, not only demonstrates our commitment to our clients in this area, but also shows that we’re abreast of policy and legislative changes in the countryside and that we aware of how these are affecting those at the coalface.

“Sarah is well placed to make the very most of her time in the Chairman’s role and we’ll provide all the support we can to ensure it is a positive experience for all involved.”

Sarah is also a longstanding member of the Agricultural Law Association and successfully completed the organisation’s Fellowship examinations in 2012.  She assumed the CLA Chair role on June 9 this year and will hold the post for two years.  During this time she’ll be responsible for chairing three meetings per year, the annual AGM, and attending at least three national Council meetings per year where she’ll report the views of the local branch.
