In a CLA Cymru event last week, members and their guests toured the production lines at this iconic Welsh business - Europe’s largest trailer maker and a much loved brand in the countryside.
The 30-strong group visited the new £5 million Ifor Williams Trailers factory in Sandycroft in Flintshire opened last year. This factory provides the extra manufacturing capacity needed to meet the strong demand for the company’s wide product range, including the market-leading livestock trailers which are now made there.
The CLA members came from across Wales and from as far afield as Harrogate. They were given a guided tour of the state-of-the-art facility by Design Engineering Manager, Andy Reece-Jones. Derek Keeble, CLA Cymru’s events manager said, “One of a number of exciting events we have lined-up for CLA members and their guests, this was a fascinating tour of a unique manufacturing facility. We’re very grateful to Mr Reece-James and the Ifor Williams team for their hospitality.”
Mr Reece-Jones said: “We were delighted to host the visit by the CLA members who were familiar with our products, particularly the livestock trailers and the horseboxes. “It is rare that we allow access to our production areas, but the CLA are key stakeholders and the group proved to be very knowledgeable and asked some searching questions.”
Ifor Williams Trailers also has four other manufacturing sites at Cynwyd, Corwen, Ruthin and Deeside Industrial Estate. As a result, the company as created 100 new jobs taking the total headcount to more than 500 people across all the sites.
As well as being sold through a network of 50 UK distributors, the trailers are exported all over the world. They have distributors as far afield as Australia and New Zealand - not to mention the former Soviet republic of Georgia, the West Indies, Japan and Africa.
Ifor Williams Trailers are the leading horsebox manufacturer in France, Germany and Belgium - with Scandinavian countries like Norway and Denmark being growth areas.
The Sandycroft factory was officially opened last autumn by Welsh Government Economy Minister Ken Skates as part of a triple celebration at Ifor Williams Trailers. As well as celebrating the iconic company’s 60th anniversary, they also launched two new new horsebox products.
