About the CLA

The CLA is a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation safeguarding the interests of landowners, and those with an economic, social and environmental interest in rural land. Our members own or manage over half the rural land in England and Wales and run more than 250 different types of businesses. We advise members on every aspect of their landownership, and our lobbying successes in key areas give them the security and certainty they need to invest in their land and businesses, which are the heart of rural communities.

The Role

Following the departure of a valued team member from the region, the CLA South West region are looking for an Adviser to join the team and start, or continue, their rural surveying journey.  At this exciting time in the rural sector, we are looking for someone with a broad appreciation of rural issues and a willingness and energy to engage in a variety of new subjects in the industry.

Working closely with the Regional Director, regional team and national policy experts, the applicant will advise CLA members across the South West on a range of issues relating to land ownership, occupation, land use and rural business. These include subjects such as, but not limited to: planning, landlord and tenant, public access, wayleaves and easements, housing, compulsory purchase, future funding and policy in farming, and rural development funding; as well as representing members’ views at stakeholder meetings and boards.

The applicant should be graduate of a RICS accredited course wishing to work towards their qualification, or be RICS and/or CAAV qualified. The Regional Adviser is expected to cover all aspects of work that would normally be covered by a chartered surveyor who is a member of, or training in, the rural faculty.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential as well as a high level of computer literacy. A full driving licence and car is required as the position involves travel throughout the South West Region.

The location, team and working arrangements

The role is based in Biddestone, near Chippenham in Wiltshire.  We operate from a converted stable building set in the rural location which is bright and spacious.  On reviewing our ways of working, some flexible working will be available on request but contact time in the office would be required each week, plus opportunities to travel across the South West to unique and special landscapes, once government restrictions are lifted. You will be working in a small, friendly team, who are very passionate about the organisation and rural affairs in general as well as being part of the CLA’s supportive team of over one hundred highly motivated individuals across England and Wales.
