Director of Policy and Advice

The Country, Land and Business Association (CLA) is the only membership organisation for owners of land, property and businesses in rural England and Wales dedicated to landownership and a thriving rural economy. Set up over 100 years ago to protect the interests of landowners, and those with an economic, social and environmental interest in rural land, CLA members own or manage around half the rural land in England and Wales and more than 250 different types of businesses.

We provide a critical voice for our c30,000 members, lobbying government and organisations on their behalf and working with UK and EU government officials and decision makers to develop policies that support the best interests of our members; working to provide them with the security and certainty to invest in their land and business. We achieve this by representing diverse and successful businesses located at the heart of rural communities and helping landowners work in the best interest of the land, wildlife and the environment.

The Director of Policy and Advice is a crucial role, making up part of the CLA’s senior management team and reporting directly to the Director General, Sarah Hendry. The successful candidate will be responsible for advising CLA members and stakeholders on all aspects of rural land management. In addition, they will plan and lead the delivery of the CLA’s priorities for policy development as well as have overall responsibility for the management of the Policy and Advice department and lead the delivery of an excellent advice service for CLA members. To this end they must be a strong, confident and engaging communicator with the ability to quietly influence and negotiate with senior politicians and government officials as well as key stakeholders. They will need to be comfortable speaking at conferences and to local and national media, acting as the ‘public voice’ of the CLA. Leading a team of c20 with four direct reports the successful candidate will be a collaborative leader who is able to offer advice and support to CLA members.
