'Desperate need for reform of public rights of way’, says CLA

25 November 2013

The CLA today (30 October) said the impact of claims of rights of way can be devastating for homeowners.

CLA National Access Adviser Sarah Slade, who attended Parliament's Joint Committee on the Draft Deregulation Bill yesterday to give evidence on reform to public rights of way said more needed to be done.

She said: "The proposals put forward by the Stakeholder Working Group and contained in the Draft Deregulation Bill are a step in the right direction.

"However, the proposals do not go far enough. We want to see additional measures included to reduce the burden on landowners to make the system fairer.

"The impact on private property must be taken into account, and there must be good quality evidence to support a claim being made. The burden of costs should also be more fairly shared."
