Blog: Spring is around the corner

Midlands Rural Surveyor John Greenshields looks at what tasks can be done now we are moving out of the winter months

As we start to look forward to longer days and hopefully being able to put away our winter coats and woolly hats for another year, there are some spring tasks that we can look to do on the land or within the farm business.

CLA members can contact their local CLA office to discuss anything that they are unsure of or need advice on.

Spring checklist

  • Signage - Do you need any signage in relation to public access? Perhaps you are lambing, calving or have spring operations the public should be alerted to.
  • Health and Safety - Do you have a back-up plan if there is an accident?
Contact CLA Healthcare to put a plan in place for yourselves.
  • Inspections - Have you inspected all of your machinery, fences and farm equipment? You may need to take steps to improve your property’s safety and security.
  • Infrastructure - Despite writing this on a miserable March day, do you have the right infrastructure for a dry spring and summer? Today may be the time to install the appropriate infrastructure and get permitted development rights for a farm reservoir.
  • Review your business energy costs – CLA Energy Services, provided by Troo, offers expert energy advice to CLA members running rural businesses. Specially formed to help CLA members reduce their electricity, gas and water expenditure, this service can help you operate more efficiently. Find out more here: https://www.claenergyservices.org.uk/ or email energyservices@cla.org.uk or call 0808 1646151.
  • Do you need to prepare anything for any agri-environmental schemes you wish to enter into? You can visit the CLA’s website for more information: https://www.cla.org.uk/agricultural-transition/
