Can't Get Online Week - October 31

Bringing fast internet connection to rural communities by wireless. Lloyd Felton of County Broadband, demonstrates the system to parish councillors at Little Horkesley. The receiver, behind him, was attached to the village hall to show it could be used to relay high quality, fast broadband to village homes and businesses.

Lloyd explained that a typical community connection would cost each household an up-front £99 to be connected and then from £7.99 a month.

Steve Clarke and Maria Oats, respectively chairman and vice-chairman of Little Horkesley Parish Council outlined the particular problems their families have because of poor broadband provision. Their children have to download homework and slow speeds make this extremely difficult – if not impossible on some occasions. Already their children are disadvantaged compared with those in faster broadband areas and both fear that in the future this can only get worse.

Poor provision also affects business. Steve runs SSC Property Services Ltd which means that he has to download large and complicated plans and drawings. He is unable to work from home, as he would like, but has to have premises in Halstead where he has fast access to the internet. Inability to download drawings efficiently is also a major problem for Ryan Jones, project manager of Essex Heritage Properties Ltd of Little Baddow.

Little Horkesley Parish Council is in discussion with County Broadband over the possibility of community wireless provision.
