Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) Nature Improvement Areas – do you manage land in a candidate site? Find out below. Within the Natural Environment White Paper published in June, the government recognised the successes of ‘landscape scale’ working (where collective action is taken to address an objective such as improving water quality, addressing a species need through the management and creation of habitat etc) and outlined proposals for the identification and funding of 12 Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs), each which they estimate will be between 10,000 – 50,000 hectares in size. Whilst these areas will be voluntary, because local communities are expected to come together and produce bids to become an NIA, the underlying principles of NIAs could have a number of implications for landowners and land managers who find themselves within one. Natural England is running a competitive grant scheme to identify where the initial 12 NIAs will occur within England. They are expected to be in place by the 1 April 2012. This week the panel has short-listed 15 candidate NIA bids (details below). The five bids that were not successful in securing the NIA funding may still continue in some form and the CLA will seek to keep members informed on the page below. Log-in to find out if your land is in a candidate NIA site and what the implications could be for your land.
