Voluntary Code of Best Practice for the Provision of Carbon Offsetting to UK Customers The CLA is interested in this consultation paper and the proposals because both the soil and tree store carbon and can therefore potentially provide "offset" to others to help them to reduce their emissions and this provides a potential opportunity for land managers. The proposal in the consultation is to better regulate carbon offsetting projects to ensure that they are delivering what they claim to achieve. Whilst we agree that this is a laudable objective, we are concerned that the proposals would seek to dismiss all voluntary offsetting projects - the new reputable innovative schemes as well as the more dubious ones. We agree that schemes need to show they are achieving their objectives but suggest that in principle, the best approach to building new standards is into existing frameworks. More detailed points can be found in the consultation response. |
