Proposals to improve Access to the English Coast

The CLA is disappointed that Defra is favouring the creation of coastal corridor, despite research which shows there is no demand for this.  We have proposed that any improvements to access should be based on locally defined need, implemented by access authorities, utilising a combination of existing mechanisms - including rights of way legislation and permissive access - an approach that would be cost effective, sensitive to local requirements and afford local democratic accountability.  A coastal corridor ignores the impact on businesses, private property rights and sensitive wildlife areas, fails to provide any form of management regime to balance access with land management, and fails to meet concerns regarding liability
