Can't Get Online Week

Can't Get Online Week The CLA will be marking national Get Online Week from 30 October to 4 November by sponsoring a special Can’t Get Online Week tour of rural England.

IT and social media expert, John Popham, will visit rural communities around the country to highlight the difficulties they face getting online. Follow John's blog throughout the week and check his progress on Twitter #cantgetonline @johnpopham

Can't Get Online Week will help rural residents connect to the internet and use social media even if they have previously come up against seemingly impossible barriers of connectivity, technology or attitude.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville is supporting Can't Get Online Week.

The CLA is lobbying to ensure that every rural business and household can access a broadband connection of at least five megabits per second. Sign our e-petition.

Listen to CLA President William Worsley explain why the internet is so important to the economic and social lives of rural people.

Schedule

Sun 30

Beaulieu Road, Marchwood, Hampshire

While the village of Marchwood has a reasonable broadband service, the residents of Beaulieu Road have no connection and the best anyone can achieve is dial-up. Beaulieu Road is in a rural location and some of its residents are farmers.

Mon 31

Little Horkesley in Essex

Read what happened at Little Horkesley

Sedgeford in Norfolk

Tue 1    Nicholson Institute in Leek, Staffordshire

Wed 2   Wray Village Institute, Lancaster, LA2 8QA

The IT Suite Westmorland Agricultural Society, Crooklands, LA7 7NH

Digital Durham, Byers Green Community Centre, 17 High Street, Byers Green, DL16 7PQ

CLA Lancashire Committee, Garstang

Interviewing members of the CLA’s Lancashire Committee and discussing estate broadband initiatives for business tenants.

Thu 3

Northern Farming Conference, Hardwick Hall Hotel, Co Durham, TS21 2EH

Goats On The Roof Café, Fontburn, Northumberland, NE61 4PL

Fri 4

Moorsholm Memorial Hall, Freebrough Road, Moorsholm, Saltburn, Yorkshire, TS12 3JB

The village of Moorsholm was chosen not only for its poor average download speed of around 1.5 Mbps but also for its huge disparity of broadband speeds.

A group of 21 volunteers within the village have been regularly monitoring their broadband speeds and the slowest download speed recorded in the village so far is just 73k (0.01mbps).

The Triton Inn, Sledmere, Driffield, East Yorkshire, Y025 3XQ

Sledmere is another excellent example of the disparity of broadband speeds within the same village. While some households enjoy a download speed of up to four Mbps others, just half a mile away, can only get online using dial-up.

The Red Lion, South Stainley, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 3ND

The village has no broadband connection due to the telephone exchange being some eight miles away in the village of Birstwith.

South Stainley has three farms, a pub and small domestic businesses. There are 13 children of school age who are frustrated at not being able to do their homework online set by their respective schools.
