Re-wilding parts of the countryside is ‘misconceived’, says the CLA The CLA today (Tuesday, 29 September) said plans to "re-wild" large tracts of the countryside are ill thought out and would have serious implications for England's working countryside. The rural economy experts reacted with concern to Hilary Benn's plans for a review of England's wildlife and ecological network which could include reintroductions of species such as lynx and elk. CLA Deputy President William Worsley said: "It is entirely right that Defra has said it will take account of ecological, economic and social considerations but we believe an independent scientific assessment is absolutely necessary as is a vigorous cost benefit analysis. These need to be made public before any further decisions are made. "The CLA is worried about the effect the proposed reintroduction will have on livestock and rural businesses.
"Any animal population, once established, has the potential to spread, and we wonder what is being to done to assess the extent of the wider area likely to be affected."
The CLA Deputy President added: "The impact of any reintroduction will inevitably be most keenly felt by those who own and manage the land. Their views and the implications for their businesses need to be carefully considered and, indeed, represented on the review panel."
