CLA Comment On Today's EFRA Committee Report On Bovine TB: Badger Culling "The EFRA Select Committee report into bovine TB and badger culling asks more questions than it provides answers, whilst the obfuscation and delay into solving the bovine TB problem grows ever greater. The committee recognises that bovine TB is a serious infectious disease, one of the most difficult animal health problems today. Yet, it seems that the thirst for scientific answers exceeds the desire to solve the TB problem. Whilst experience worldwide shows that concerted, sustained effort against all vectors of disease is essential if control and eradication is to be achieved, the committee appears to have allowed itself to be led into considering such issues as how the individual effects of cattle and badger control measures can be evaluated, when what is required is a combined approach which will actually solve the problem." says Country Land and Business Association (CLA) dairy adviser Sarah Slade today (14 March).
She added: " One of the key questions - whether there would be sufficient people and willingness to carry out a cull - has been answered by the results of a joint CLA/NFU survey which showed that not only were 94% of respondents willing to permit culling on their land, but that some 65% were willing to undertake that cull themselves. " We think that the Committee would have been better advised had they been shown other evidence, such as the Irish trials, which would have assisted in answering many of the questions raised, and we trust that the Government consultation - which has now closed - will take full account of all the evidence. " CLA supports a comprehensive approach, encompassing both cattle and wildlife measures, with the aim of eradicating this pernicious disease. " |
