CLA in the news: land prices offer opportunity for tenant farming

CLA in the news: land prices offer opportunity for tenant farming Speaking on the Today programme (12 Nov), the President of the Country Land & Business Association Mark Hudson outlined opportunities for tenant farmers to lease land from or enter into partnerships with new non-farming landowners. Mark Hudson's comments come after the latest figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors point to a 30% increase in the price of farmland over the past 12 months, boosted by urban dwellers coming in and buying up land.

Some tenant farmers have expressed concern that the rise of urban-based landowners in the countryside was restricting the amount of land coming onto the market whilst other commentators have suggested that the uncertainty over CAP reform is making potential sellers reluctant to put their land on the market.

Whilst emphasising the need for the Government "to signal that they think that food production in this country is important" and stressing the need to "continue to produce as much of our food as we can", Mr Hudson explained:

"The reason I say it's an opportunity is because a lot of the people who are buying up land are not interested in farming at all.

"They buy land and suddenly realise that the grass grows and the hedges grow, so they are going to be looking for (tenant farmers) to farm the land for them.

"So there is going to be much more opportunity I believe for people to lease and rent land and go into joint ventures with owners, enabling (tenant farmers) to expand their businesses."

Mr Hudson accepted that such a scenario was not necessarily the case in some areas of the country, particularly in parts of the south of England.

But he stressed: "Of course there are still large parts of the country where there are plenty of opportunities."
