The Glorious 13th - a shot in the arm for the rural economy

The Glorious 13th - a shot in the arm for the rural economy The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is relieved that the start of the grouse shooting season can begin on Monday 13 August. The rural economy will be given a much needed boost as estates and accommodation providers gear up to welcome the seasonal influx of shooters from across the world. As it is prohibited to shoot game on a Sunday, this year's Glorious 12th will have to roll back a day.

David Fursdon, CLA president said: "While Foot and Mouth continues to be a concern to farmers everywhere, the Government's response has been largely proportionate and the countryside remains open. Although many agricultural shows and events have been cancelled as a precautionary measure, it is a relief that other traditional country pursuits can continue, albeit with the need for increased vigilance and full biosecurity measures.

"The efforts of gamekeepers and estate staff should be applauded as they have worked tirelessly in combating the wet summer to ensure a profitable season. Unseasonable weather and the FMD situation have posed real threats to the viability of non-farming businesses. At this time the countryside needs as big a cash injection as it can get, and the benefits from this sport will soon begin to filter through the wider rural economy," concluded Mr Fursdon.
