Cuts in red tape for landlords good for rural housing market, says CLA

Cuts in red tape for landlords good for rural housing market, says CLA

The CLA has today welcomed the promise by Housing Minister Grant Shapps to scrap plans to introduce further regulations on private landlords.

The Association said many of its members who let property to residential tenants would have been hit hard by more bureaucracy and the imposition of further costs, especially in rural areas where the margins are often already very small.

CLA President William Worsley said: "This is an extremely sensible announcement by the new Government. More than enough powers already exist with which to control bad landlords. The last thing that good landlords need is more bureaucracy.

"Many of our landlord members are increasingly disillusioned with the seemingly endless new requirements. For some, there is no doubt that a national register of landlords would have been the final straw. If the supply of housing were to be thus reduced, especially in rural areas, the ultimate effect would have been to penalise tenants too."

Mr Worsley added: "The CLA opposed the previous Government's proposals for further regulation in their response to the Rugg Review Consultation. I am delighted that the new Government not only acknowledges that the vast majority of the three million tenants in private rented accommodation are satisfied with the service they receive from their landlords, but has also seen sense by not adopting these additional measures."
