Community Infrastructure Levy will have rural impact, says the CLA The CLA today (11 February 2010) outlined the impact of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) to rural businesses. The rural economy experts say that the draft CIL regulations, published on 10 February 2010, have the potential to adversely affect economic development in rural areas. The regulations state that a levy will be charged on almost all new business building developments.
CLA President William Worsley said: "We are pleased the Government has listened and made some changes to provide more flexible planning policy for economic development in rural areas. However, the introduction of the CIL could have the effect of negating those positive changes and as a result will have a huge impact on the innovation, profitability and sustainability of rural businesses.
"Ultimately, the CIL could affect the amount of money that landowners and their rural businesses have to pay towards public goods and services, which are required in respect of environmental land management."
He added: "If CIL charges from individual planning authorities are set too high for rural businesses, it could choke economic development in rural areas. This means fewer employment opportunities and less sustainability of rural communities."
The new Community Infrastructure Levy regulations come into force on 6 April 2010.

Solicitors Indemnity Fund . Solicitors in the CLA Legal Team are not covered by the Solicitors Indemnity Fund in relation to professional negligence in relation to any advice given by them.
