St George’s Day – Now Unforgettable The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has announced the winner of a nationwide competition to write a rhyme which helps people remember the date of St George's Day. Ten-year-old Jack Kirk from Nottinghamshire is the proud winner with his rhyme:
"As April blooms it's fair to saySt George's day is on the way Shakespeare's birthday, sonnets heard This special day, April 23rd" The CLA set school children the challenge of creating a rhyme that would keep the date in the national consciousness after a survey revealed that only 20% of people living in England could correctly identify 23 April as England's national day. From a full postbag, the judges Stephen Twigg, Schools Minister, Tim Collins, Shadow Education Secretary and the CLA President Mark Hudson chose two winners from the categories 11 years and under and 12 to 16 year olds. Stephen Twigg said, "The rhymes were very impressive. It's encouraging that young people were so ready to rise to the challenge of helping everyone remember the date of St George's Day." Tim Collins said, "The winning rhyme will help ensure that the 23rd of April is stamped in everyone's memories as St George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday - undeniably, two occasions for celebration." Winner Jack Kirk was presented with the prize, to be shared between him and his school, St John's Primary in Worksop, by Helen Woolley, CLA Regional Director. The prizes for the winning school are books for the school library, footballs and a handy cheque. The winner and runner up will personally receive family theme park passes, sports equipment and merchandise, commemorative St George medals and Ordnance Survey goodie bags. Helen Woolley said, "St George's Day is a marvellous opportunity to celebrate England and the wonderful range and quality of food grown and produced locally. Hopefully this winning rhyme and the activities of organisations including the CLA in celebrating our national day will ensure that St George's Day is once again a good excuse for a party." St George's Day Fast Facts - 23 April is also Shakespeare's birthday. - St George is also the patron saint of farmers and farm workers, butchers, riders, saddlers and horses! - In 1415, St George's Day was declared a great feast day.
