CLA in the news: ethnic minorities in rural areas

CLA in the news: ethnic minorities in rural areas David Fursdon, Deputy President of the CLA, spoke on BBC Radio 4's Today programme regarding claims by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) that large parts of the country are no-go areas for people from ethnic minorities. Whilst acknowledging that some people in the countryside are 'blinkered', Mr Fursdon said he would welcome more ethnic minority people visiting and working in the countryside suggesting that this could help to dynamise communities and bring new skills and experiences.

Also speaking on the programme Trevor Phillips, CEO of the CRE said 'I doubt if anybody in the countryside wants as it were to keep people out, but I think what we're seeing is a gradual drift to a really rather difficult situation in which people from ethnic minorities feel uncomfortable and by the way I think some countryside dwellers feel uncomfortable in some parts of towns. I think this is a shame because most of us from ethnic minorities come from rural backgrounds. My own grandfather was a peasant farmer, my family comes from a fishing village.'

Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, a black farmer from Devon, said that the country was a wonderful place as long as people were prepared to accept that it was different from urban areas.

Mr Emmanuel-Jones concluded: 'If you really want to have a great time in this country I would say get out of the cities and get down to the countryside.'
