CLA lobbying helps secure relaxation of NVZ rules The UK has today been given approval for a derogation under the Nitrates Directive that will allow manures to be applied to a whole farm limit of 250kg/ha of nitrogen per year for grazing livestock instead of the 170kg/ha limit. This will allow nutrients to be supplied to crop growth requirements using a valuable resource.
Applications for this will have to be made annually to the Environment Agency.
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The CLA has lobbied hard to ensure that this derogation would be approved by the EU Nitrates Committee. Defra must be relieved that some of the fallout from the livestock sector and rural businesses will be reduced.
"But it is deeply concerning that support for innovation and technology was not at the forefront of our Government's mind during the whole of the Nitrate Vulnerable Zones review. This could have helped ensure that businesses could adapt to the challenge of meeting water quality standards as well as reduce green house gas emissions. We expect this shortfall to be reviewed.
"We will continue to lobby for changes to this severely flawed piece of environmental legislation. We believe that since no proper cost-benefit analysis has been completed, disproportionate costs have been levelled on farmers and land managers."
