CLA calls for measured approach to ‘potentially good’ heritage planning policy proposal

CLA calls for measured approach to ‘potentially good’ heritage planning policy proposal

The CLA has broadly welcomed the new draft heritage planning policy published by the Government – while calling for some amendments.

In its submission to the Government consultation exercise on the proposed policy – PPS15 – the rural economy experts said the draft policy is "potentially a major step forward which can greatly improve heritage protection, by making it easier to make arguments for the sympathetic changes which are needed to keep heritage economically viable and relevant to the future".

The CLA said it is taking a measured and constructive approach to the proposal – and has made a series of suggestions to improve it.

CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The very negative reaction to this potentially good proposal from a few quarters appears to be based more on paranoia than reality.

"The CLA believes there is enough good in this paper to potentially make it a positive step for heritage."

The CLA President added: "CLA members manage more than a quarter of all heritage in England. We want to work with Government and other stakeholders to get the PPS right and to create the viable future for heritage which all of us want."
