We Must Find a Clear Approach to Guaranteeing a Sustainable Countryside

The CLA says that the "2006 State of the Countryside Report", published today (Wednesday 19 July) by the Commission for Rural Communities, clearly demonstrates that unless the Government introduces some new policies, the countryside and its communities are not sustainable.

David Fursdon, CLA National President, said: "If the 25-year projection for migration to the countryside from urban areas is correct - a growth of 18% compared with 6-9% in urban areas - then the resultant influx will lead to the collapse of the rural infrastructure. Policies must look further ahead.

"We are already seeing the signs. The average age of people living in rural communities is increasing as people retire to their dream home. Ironically this means higher house prices which drives out young families as it reduces the needs for schools. This is highlighted by the decline in public services and the closure of local post offices and shops.

"One of the few encouraging findings of this report is the increasing number of people working from home. Quite simply, without our "Broadband Rural Britain" campaign, this would not have happened. The Government must listen to organisations like the CLA.

"Much of the report comes as no surprise. We have seen the doom and gloom message from this report year after year, and that's why we're already campaigning, lobbying and advising on the issues raised: more flexible planning policies, a more equitable tax burden, provision of affordable housing, local sourcing - as we understand the need to find approaches that increase the sustainability of our countryside.

"This report should be looked at very closely across Government and who should listen to those who live and work there - they are the people who have a real stake in whether their communities live or die."
