CLA hands Secretary of State EID petition with more than 2,000 names

CLA hands Secretary of State EID petition with more than 2,000 names CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher and CLA North East Chairman Annabelle Morshead today (Tuesday, 25 November) presented Secretary of State Hilary Benn with a petition of more than 2,000 signatures against the implementation of electronic sheep tagging.

CLA North East has led the CLA campaigning against the introduction of the costly and unnecessary tags as part of widespread condemnation of the scheme by the industry.

The CLA President said: "The benefits of compulsory EID are utterly unproven, and the hard-pressed uplands sheep industry cannot afford this latest piece of Brussels pen-pushing.

"The CLA petition is part of an industry-wide condemnation of EID, including the NFU, NSA, TFA and SRPBA. We hope today's presentation will highlight to Defra the deep concern held by farmers throughout the industry on this European issue."

Mr Benn said: "I'm very well aware of the concern that many farmers feel about electronic identification of sheep  and we are going to do all we can to minimise the impact. I'm very happy to receive your petition."

Mrs Morshead said: "We'd like to thank Hilary Benn for his time and for accepting the CLA petition. He listened to what we had to say and obviously understands the issue. We are grateful for him saying that he will do what he can to minimise the impact of EID. The introduction of this unnecessary piece of legislation will be expensive for all sheep farmers."

SRPBA Chairman Luke Borwick expressed his support for the CLA petition.

He said: "This idiotic piece of regulation will further damage an industry which is already on its knees, without delivering any obvious welfare or efficiency gains.

"Moreover, since the regulation will only be enforced in nations with a national flock of more than 600,000 sheep, I fail to see how this will improve traceability across the whole EU.  We need a sensible approach, and this is certainly not the answer."
