CLA Supports Call For Government To Prove It Is Listening To Rural Needs New legislation and government policies must be adequately "rural proofed" to ensure rural communities are not disadvantaged says the Country Land and Business Association (CLA). The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee's report on the Government's draft Natural Environment and Rural Communities Bill acknowledges the importance of rural proofing by calling for Government responses to rural proofing to be made public. The Commission for Rural Communities now holds the responsibility for ensuring policy-makers take into account the consequences for rural people and businesses.
CLA President Mark Hudson said, "It's encouraging that this report emphasises the need for Government to always think how their actions and policies affect people living and working in the countryside. There have been a few high profile failures such as the Home Office's firearms control proposals neglecting to consider the effects on pest control and the changes to event licensing law that were not properly communicated to countryside show organisers. Now we learn that plans to overhaul the GP surgery system could see rural people traveling a long way to see a doctor. "Rural proofing of government policy is needed now more than ever and we support the call for publication of evidence that the Government is listening to the advice from its rural champion - however, the CLA will continue to be vigilant." 29 March 2005 |
