Dairy farmer calls for delivery to rural doorsteps The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has elected Mark Hudson to the position of President of the CLA. Mark is an organic dairy farmer from the Vale of Clwyd in Denbighshire, North Wales.
Mark says: 'With countryside issues hitting the news more and more, it is essential for those living in rural areas to have a national voice through the CLA with which to raise their concerns. Recent reports suggest Lord Haskins' recommendations are likely to bring yet another major rearrangement of policy delivery to the countryside, when bodies like the Countryside Agency have barely had time to establish themselves. 'If this is the case, the CLA will be urging the Government to ensure that any new agencies will be fully representative of those living in rural areas. If a Land Management Agency is set up, its remit should be first and foremost, to foster the economic and social well-being of rural communities, who in turn will deliver the environment people want. A thriving rural economy pays for conservation; it is not the other way round. The UK's landscape relies almost entirely on those who farm and manage the land and without active land management, the environment suffers. 'Like every city, the countryside is dynamic and needs to invest and develop to survive. The process of long-term disinvestment already hitting some of the more vulnerable rural areas is as insidious as it is intractable and irreversible. 'The Government must continue to fund the research behind the Countryside Agency's reports on rural disadvantage, to expose and ultimately address the inequalities between city and country living in terms of wealth, jobs, housing and local services. 'Over the next twelve months the CLA will continue to campaign on the indivisibility of economy and environment. Other issues we will be covering include rural and affordable housing, crime in the countryside, European reforms in agriculture and many of the new laws and liabilities affecting property owners as well as land owners.' Mark is only the second Welsh member to become national President of the CLA. Mark's presidency will run for a year, with the possibility of re-election for a further year. Mark succeeds Sir Edward Greenwell, the former President of the CLA. The Country Land and Business Association is the leading organisation representing and supporting businesses of all types in rural communities, including all forms of land use and management, tourism, services and industry. It represents the breadth of the rural economy and its 40,000 members own and manage half the rural land in England and Wales and run more than 250 types of businesses. |
