Leading Tory applauds CLA Game Fair

Leading Tory applauds CLA Game Fair Leading Tory MP Alan Duncan today (Friday, 24 July) toured the CLA Game Fair and said everyone should learn what rural Britain has to offer.

The Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, proved a popular figure, especially with local food producers and he praised the CLA for its efforts at showcasing countryside life and events.

Mr Duncan said: "This is a fantastically British institution. There are tens of thousands of people here today and you see wonderful British produce and lovely people too.

"You've got character and initiative here and it illustrates everything I think we should be campaigning to protect."

The Tory, who represents Rutland and Melton, spent over an hour walking around the site at Belvoir Castle near Grantham, Leicestershire. He was accompanied by CLA Vice President, Harry Cotterell and CLA Chief Legal Adviser and Head of Policy Services, Christopher Price.

During his tour of the Game Fair the Minister met CLA Chief Surveyor Oliver Harwood where he learned about the CLA's revolutionary software package – Carbon Accounting for Land Managers (CALM). Mr Harwood told Mr Duncan that, over time, farmers and land managers had learned to manage profit and loss accounts - now they would have to learn carbon accounting as part of all future business management.

Mr Duncan also visited the CLA's broadband stand where people can check if broadband is actually available to them, and if not, what they can do about it. One option, he discovered, is CLA Rural Broadband – a joint venture with Eurosat to provide CLA members with rural broadband via satellite.

The Minister said: "I think what the CLA is doing is good because they are forcing bureaucracy and the inertia of big companies to adapt to rural needs.

"It's all very well just developing towns but if you're more than 2 miles from a telephone exchange and you are at the end of the copper wires you're probably not going to get the capacity to run a small business.

"To be able to boost the capability of broadband so that rural businesses can flourish is a good campaign and I think the CLA is doing it in a very practical way."

Alan Duncan MP represents one of the largest rural constituencies in the country and his constituency campaigns have included traffic in Melton and save the red telephone box.
