St George's day momentum reaches House of Lords Less than a week after a poll commissioned by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) revealed that only one in five people living in England could name the date of St George's Day, Lord Grantchester asked the Government yesterday if it would support the celebration of St George's Day (23rd April) by making it a national day of local food procurement for all public sector bodies.
Lord Grantchester is CLA's Cheshire Chairman and a leading exponent of local sourcing. By raising the question in the House of Lords the CLA hopes that the Government's attention will be drawn to the importance of local sourcing to rural economies and the environment as a result of a reduction in 'food miles'.As St George is also patron saint of farm workers, it is particularly appropriate that other organisations should follow the CLA's lead by using 23rd of April as a focus for local food. The St George's Day message has also reached the House of Commons. An Early Day Motion (No 534) tabled by Labour MP Hilton Dawson has already attracted cross party support from 30 MPs, including the Scottish National Party, noting the efforts of the CLA, in particular its campaign in the North West, to encourage people to 'Think Local, Buy Local and Act Local'; and welcoming the CLA's work in encouraging people to celebrate the patron saint of England, and agriculture workers, in an inclusive manner to the benefit of all communities. The CLA is organising 'Great English Breakfasts' on Friday, April 23rd across the regions, with local produce featuring heavily on the menu at all events. On April 23rd, the CLA will also be announcing a national competition for schoolchildren, to help raise awareness of England's national day amongst the younger generation. *ICM Research interviewed a random selection of 860 adults aged 18+ in England by telephone between 8th - 12th April 2004. Interviews were conducted across the country and the results have been weighted to the profile of all adults. 20 April 2004 |
