CLA in the news: events tax could hit CLA game fair The Times (24 December) has reported on a government plan to introduce taxes on large licensed events, such as the CLA Game Fair. Under the proposal any public entertainment event with more than 6,000 people that involves using temporary accommodation and serves alcohol or late night refreshments could be subject to a levy of up to £50,000.
The money would be payable to the local council to cover the costs of health and safety checks by officials at the event. The proposals, part of a review of the licensing system, will also affect hundreds of outdoor music concerts at stately homes, literary festivals, garden shows and, potentially, agricultural shows.Quoted in the article is Dr Charles Trotman, Rural Economy Adviser at the CLA, who comments: "We usually pay about £300 for a Game Fair licence. Now we are going to be hit by many thousands and don't know how we can pay it." The CLA, with others, is lobbying against the charges. |
