The CLA says Food 2030 highlights farming’s ‘massively important’ role The CLA said today (Tuesday, 5 January 2010) that Food 2030, announced by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn at the Oxford Farming Conference, is a considered and well-balanced paper. CLA President William Worsley said he looked forward to working with Government to achieve a more competitive food industry, with healthy nutritional food produced more sustainably, while Greenhouse Gas emissions and waste are reduced and skills and research and development improved. He added: "This paper provides a very fair assessment of the pros and cons of different kinds of meat consumption from the health and environmental point of view, as well as a balanced analysis of the need for new farming technology. "It does not tell people to stop or even reduce their red meat consumption, but aims at healthier eating by informing consumer choice with more and better information. It spells out the massively important place of the food industry in the British economy and agriculture in the food industry. "It hails many of the achievements of farming, such as increasing yields, reduced fertiliser application rates and a 20 percent reduction in Green House Gases." Mr Worsley added that from a farmer's perspective while the papers appears to encourage British farmers to think they should be producing more food, it reiterates the Government's long-stated budget-driven policy to eliminate EU agricultural subsidies and border protection. He said: "The Government knows that this will significantly restructure the industry, to fewer larger units, reduce production and increase imports - some of dubious environmental quality. The Government is consistently underestimating the EU budget required for Food and Environmental Security, and needs to confront and be straight with the industry and the British public on its stance. "It also means that the UK has effectively isolated itself politically from the EU debate on the CAP when we should be playing a central role in this debate." |
