The CLA ‘delighted’ at Government commitment not to let Norfolk flood

The CLA has welcomed Defra Minister of State Phil Woolas' promise that the Norfolk coast will be defended from rising sea levels for the next 50 years with work beginning as early as September.

CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The CLA is delighted with this announcement which is a great outcome for all the lobbying we have been doing on this issue. Indeed, much of the farm land in the area is listed as Grade 1 defined as the "best and most versatile land" for farming which will be crucial for England as food security problems grow.

"The many people who live and farm on the coast in this area will be relieved to know the Government is going to fight to keep the land."

The announcement is a dramatic change from the proposal by Natural England which included an option of allowing 25sqm of Norfolk to flood to relieve the pressure of the rising sea levels.

This 50-year strategy ties in with a statement Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, made last week at the Royal Show.

He announced that £500,000 would be spent on looking at how flood management can reduce risk in vulnerable areas.
