Defra ducks the real issues with paltry flood protection measures, says the CLA The CLA today (Thursday, 20 August) said that the £16million Defra plans to invest in flood protection will not deal with the underlying causes of flooding. The money will be spent on the development of plans for dealing with surface water flooding and on household protection but not on managing water levels which is where the big problem lies. CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "The fanfare surrounding this announcement only demonstrates how misleading Defra is being about the true costs that local authorities will eventually be saddled with. There needs to be significant investment in the real problem – water level management through flood defence schemes and maintenance of existing watercourses. "Flooding will become more frequent as a result of climate change, and Government has a responsibility to help property owners and businesses to protect their assets in vulnerable areas. "Inconsistencies in the Government approach should not prevent people and businesses from saving their own properties - this cannot be right." The CLA President added: "In light of the Pitt Review, investment should be made available to ensure that the underlying problems causing the flooding are dealt with as a priority."
