Fed up of Fly-tipping The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is today launching a survey on flytipping in the countryside. The online survey is open to the public and will run for the month of April.
CLA President Mark Hudson says: 'People are fed up of seeing rubbish dumped in ditches, fields, country lanes and even beauty spots. The countryside is particularly vulnerable, but there is very little information on the frequency and hotspots of flytipping in rural areas, which our survey will try to establish. 'Owners and occupiers are frequently left to clean-up illegally dumped rubbish. The Government should be investigating the scale of the problem and the costs to individuals and local authorities who have to clean-up after these rubbish rogues. 'Solutions to flytipping might include waiving small builders' fees at local dumps. Builders' waste is one of the most commonly dumped materials. Local authorities should also be given greater powers to erect barriers on public rights of way, because flytippers often drive to remote locations to dump a carload of rubbish.' The CLA's survey includes questions on: _the most common and unusual types of rubbish encountered _where the rubbish was dumped e.g. at a beauty spot or near a waste site _how local authorities have responded to reports of flytipping incidents _whether respondents have had to pay for the clean-up of an area and how much it cost CLA members who suffer from regular flytipping include CLA Norfolk Vice-Chairman Piers Pratt, who was filmed by the BBC's Inside Out East team tackling 80 tyres dumped on his land. The clean-up cost Piers £650. CLA Hertfordshire and Middlesex President Harry Bott deals with one fly-tipping incident a month on his 1,700 acre estate. Fridges, kitchen units, armchairs and used nappies have all ended up on his estate. 'You name it, we've had it,' says Harry, who organises an annual clean-up of his area on Good Friday, where 30 villagers collect nearly a ton of waste which the local authority then removes. The clean-up is followed by tea and hot cross buns at Harry's place. Take part in the survey. 1 April 2004 |
