The great walls of Yorkshire - the only contest of its kind

The great walls of Yorkshire - the only contest of its kind A welcome revival in the craft of dry stone walling is expected to attract a record entry this year for Yorkshire's premier competition for wallers. Held every two years, the Millennium Wall Competition is organised by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and the Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild. What makes it the only contest of its kind in Britain is that it is for wallers of real dry stone walls built in the countryside, unlike the showground contests where wallers compete in building short lengths of wall just for the day.

Originally devised to preserve the skills essential to maintaining the character of rural Yorkshire, the competition saw entries increase by a third in 2002. The CLA is now seeking entries for walls built in the two years up to June this year from either owners or wallers. Marks are awarded for style, landscape impact, tidiness and difficulty of the terrain. The wall has to be at least 10 metres long and within the historic boundaries of Yorkshire.

"Once considered to be a dying craft, dry stone walling's survival owes much to the realisation that only by being able to use traditional skills and materials can we ensure that Yorkshire's heritage will not be lost," says Yorkshire CLA Director Dorothy Fairburn. "A new generation of skilled craftsmen has emerged to supply an increasing demand from farmers and landowners and our contest stimulates that very positive trend."

Entry details can be obtained by e-mailing claoffice@clayork.demon.co.uk. Closing date for the competition is the beginning of June.
