Animal Welfare Minister Tours Game Farm

Animal Welfare Minister Tours Game Farm Animal Welfare Minister, Ben Bradshaw MP yesterday (4th August) visited a game farm in the south of England as guest of both The Game Farmers' Association (GFA) and Country Land and Business Association (CLA). The site visit was organised to show the minister how a properly-run game farm reaps conservation and biodiversity benefits. It was also a prime opportunity for Mr Bradshaw to get first-hand answers to his animal welfare questions – an opportunity he took great advantage of as he spoke to Tim Robbins, who runs the family game farm.

Charles Nodder, political adviser to the GFA, who toured the game farm with the minister, said: "The visit went very well and the minister seemed pleased to have been invited. Mr Bradshaw fully understood the issues and wasn't afraid to ask questions. He saw everything from the hatcheries to the reared eight week poults that were ready to be sent to estates."

Bruce Wilson-North, Director- General of the CLA who also accompanied the minister said: "I'm very grateful that the minister took the time out of his busy diary to see game farming for himself.  We discussed laying systems, disease control and issues concerning the welfare of reared birds. We also took the opportunity to discuss regulation and codes of practice."

Mr Bradshaw will be leading the Government's Animal Welfare Bill which expected to be introduced in the House of Commons later this year.
