CLA in the news: Shooting into the future November's edition of The Field asks various people closely involved with shooting, how they see the sport operating in 10 years time. Mark Hudson, CLA President is among those whose forecasts were quoted:
'Where will we be in 10 years hence? The CLA sees a future where the sport of shooting has been fully recognised by government as a valued contributor to the economic and environmental well-being of the country. Those who are opposed have no arguments that carry any weight with either the wider public or politicians compared to the proven and evident benefits delivered by members who shoot.'This, after a number of false starts and in the face of some determined opposition from saboteurs and their allies, has been achieved by self-regulation, fair governance and a willingness by sportsmen to listen and change. 'All shoots are now fully compliant with the Code of Good Shooting Practice, and the vast majority belong to the shoot assurance scheme operated jointly by the shooting organisations including the CLA. Guns train out of season to ensure low wounding rates, and all young shots are members of voluntary certification schemes. 'Assurance secures the delivery of environmental enhancement, and the protection of neighbours who were formerly affected by noise nuisance and damage from intensive rearing. It is rare for locals to have reason to be concerned about any shoot. Hunts, pony trekkers and tourists enjoy varied and attractive rights of way over land managed for shooting in harmony with guns and guests. 'Under the new shooting regimes, rearing only takes place where the overall management of the shoot permits a gain in habitat. Wild-bird shoots are common, and significantly more people are involved in game-keeping, many on a part-time basis. Bag numbers have dropped and sportsmen continue to take pleasure from the quality of the day, the landscape and the company. 'Shotguns are still available on a certificate, and rearing continues on licenced game farms in accordance with the Game Farmers' Association statutory code of practice. Game is available all year round, fresh in season, and frozen at other times, largely through specialist and mail-order outlets, and the new boutique shops that have been set up inside the major supermarkets. 'Lead shot remains on the agenda, but the government is maintaining a UK derogation against the ban threatened by the EU, having recognised the huge economic and environmental gains (assured in the recent independent reassessment of the economic and environmental benefits of shooting, updating the 2006 PACEC study) that shooting in the United Kingdom delivers.' |
