Take action to make the Campaign for the Farmed Environment a success

Take action to make the Campaign for the Farmed Environment a success

Over 80% of farmers and land managers are aware of the Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE) and most will take voluntary action to ensure the Campaign is a success, according to a recent survey published by Defra.

During February and March this year, over 3000 farmers across the country responded to a Defra survey on CFE. But whilst awareness levels are high, good intentions to manage land voluntarily need to be converted into action before it is too late to avoid the regulatory approach.

Since the survey was issued, county-based postcard campaigns and local Campaign events have highlighted how farmers and land managers can play their part. Those visiting Cereals this year on 9-10 June should take advantage of the advice and support on offer throughout the CFE trail. The trail has been developed by the Campaign partnership to help farmers gain a greater understanding and provide them with advice about the voluntary management measures which can be put in place on farm. The CFE stand (number 717) will provide an opportunity to meet the local coordinators and farmer chairs, and CFE partners on the trail will help answer those burning questions about the Campaign.

CLA President William Worsley said: "It's encouraging to see that so many farmers and land managers are behind the Campaign but we must not become complacent. Now is the time to turn supportive words into action.

"Replace your expired ELS management plan options with in-field options, and remember that everyone can undertake a Campaign voluntary measure regardless of whether you're in ELS or not.

"There is still a lot of work to be done in order make to the Campaign a success and avoid compulsory regulation."

For farmers and land managers who haven't already taken action, CFE partners urge them to follow these simple steps to ensure the Campaign is a success:

  • If you are in ELS, renew your agreement or enter ELS for the first time and choose at least one in-field option.  Many expiring ELS agreements over the summer months will be looking for points to replace the old management plan options so this is an ideal opportunity to incorporate some of the options that will contribute to the CFE's targets.
  • Retain your uncropped land and record this on the annual Defra June Survey
  • Adopt at least one voluntary measure outside of a formal agri-environment agreement
