Farmers Win Right To Hold Motorsports Events Britain's 7,000 motorsports events will be able to continue to provide pleasure for enthusiasts and an extra revenue stream for farmers thanks to a revision of the farm payment scheme rules by Defra.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) welcomed the revision by Lord Bach, Minister for Sustainable Farming and Food. The CLA had been in discussions with Defra to find a solution to the challenge of balancing the requirements of farmers wishing to host motorsports events and the rules of the Single Payment Scheme. On Friday 13 May, Lord Bach confirmed that motorsports events can be held on agricultural land, for a limited number of days per year, without jeopardising the farmer's eligibility for payments. CLA President Mark Hudson said, "This is great news for farmers who earn rent from these events; great news for people who enjoy participating in and attending the motorsports events; and great news for the rural businesses that depend on the motorsports industry. Defra is to be congratulated on making a swift and common sense decision. "However, farmers must be careful to remember that cross compliance conditions, in particular the soil management conditions, will apply to fields hosting motorsports events. Farmers must make careful assessment about which, if any, fields used for such events would be better classed as non-agricultural and thus outside the cross compliance conditions." Under the revised guidance, motorsports are now on the list of non-agricultural activities that can occur for 28 days per year on agricultural land. However, planning regulations affecting the use of agricultural land further limit this to14 days per year. 16 May 2005 |
