Countryside code is a small step in the right direction says CLA

Countryside code is a small step in the right direction says CLA The Country Land & Business Association (CLA) welcomes the promotion of the revised Countryside Code but emphasises that there is still a huge task ahead of clearly explaining the complexities of where and when people can use the new open access land when the first two areas open on 19 September. 'As a simple behavioural code, the Countryside Code is a handy reminder to young people how to respect the animals, people and environment when they are visiting the countryside. However, it falls a long way short of clearly explaining to the public about the new areas of access land,' said Mark Hudson CLA President.

'Whilst members of walkers' groups will most certainly receive detailed advice, we do not believe that the general public will take the time and trouble to cross-check a website to see where they can and can't walk - never mind understand that the access land may be closed at certain times for land management purposes, ' continued Mark Hudson.

The CLA are working with the Countryside Agency on a number of briefings for land owners and land managers in the first two areas which will open to the public: the Lower North West and the South East.

Caroline Bedell, a CLA Surveyor who conducted part of the briefings, commented, 'We've been swamped with queries from farmers and land managers who are concerned that people view the Act1 as a general right to roam and not as a restricted right of access to mapped areas. We foresee this causing unnecessary confusion and conflict and costing the already burdened agricultural sector.'
