HRH The Duke of Kent and three ministers visit CLA Game Fair

HRH The Duke of Kent and three Government ministers today (22 July 2011) all toured The CLA Game Fair – Britain's biggest countryside show.

The Duke, and Defra Secretary of State Caroline Spelman, Farming Minister Jim Paice and Natural Environment Minister Richard Benyon clearly enjoyed the massive event being held from Friday, 22 July – Sunday, 24 July.

Mrs Spelman said: "I'm delighted to be at The CLA Game Fair and think it's even bigger and better than last year. I noticed there is a lot of interest in the wide range of renewable energies that landowners can instal on their land and there are a lot of opportunities here for land managers to look at equipment and gather the right information.

"The CLA has done a tremendous job in raising public awareness for the challenges that face those who own land and live and work in the countryside. The CLA Game Fair is one of the focal points in the year when people from all over the country come to see everything that goes on. The CLA can be very proud of the fact that this event is a really important one in Defra's agricultural calendar."

Mr Paice said: "I have spoken to a tremendous variety of rural businesses here and everything I have seen so far way exceeds my expectations, helped of course by excellent weather."

Mr Benyon said: "The CLA Game Fair gets better and better, and has become the blue-riband rural event, which unites so many different strands of rural life. I have been coming since I was a child and it's great to see it on a real high."

He added: "Rural employment and economic indicators are improving, but not as quickly as we would like in an ideal world. One of the big jobs we have had since becoming the Government is to tackle the impression that rural business is something quaint and 'crafty'. With the roll-out of rural broadband, we will see more high-tech businesses in the countryside, so this is a really exciting time to be managing a rural business."
