The CLA Game Fair Director David Hough honoured with award

The CLA Game Fair Director David Hough honoured with award CLA Game Fair Director David Hough was today (Saturday, 23 July) presented with the Contribution to the Countryside Award by The Duchess of Kent.

The Duchess thanked David, who is retiring this year after 15 years directing The CLA Game Fair, for what he had done and said it was an honour to present the award.

CLA Game Fair Board Chairman Vincent Hedley Lewis paid tribute to David for the unflappable leadership and enormous vision he has given Britain's biggest countryside event.

He said that David had built up his own team and managed to increase the number of stands from 285 to more than 1,000, and the number of visitors from 53,000 to more than 150,000 – "a truly remarkable feat".

Mr Hedley Lewis recalled how, because of Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001, David had been, at short notice, forced to move the entire event, turning a green field site into a fully functioning Game Fair.

He said: "He still managed to deliver a successful Game Fair without fuss. He also dealt with the difficulties posed by the cancellation of the Game Fair in 2007 following torrential rain at Harewood in Yorkshire. Sometimes people are judged by how well they would behave under fire. I can assure you this man is brilliant under fire."

Mr Hedley Lewis concluded: "The CLA Game Fair gives us a chance to show what life is like in the UK countryside. David has made a very special contribution to the countryside."

David Hough accepted The CLA Game Fair Contribution to the Countryside Award, which has only been awarded on five previous occasions.

He said: "I didn't see this coming! It has been a fantastic 15 years – totally different from my previous job running the Boat Show.

"I could not have done it without The Game Fair team or the help of the media. The Game Fair committees have been superb and my family has put up with The Game Fair for a long time! Thank you very much for this award – I am very honoured."

CLA President William Worsley said: "I am delighted David has received this well-earned reward. During his time running The CLA Game Fair, it has developed into a truly world class event showcasing the work the CLA does for the countryside to an ever-increasing audience. The fact that all four Defra Ministers have visited and toured the show is testament to that."
