Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies visits ‘fantastic’ CLA Game Fair Government Minister Huw Irranca-Davies today (Sunday, 26 July) visited The CLA Game Fair – and called it "fantastic". Mr Irranca-Davies, the Minister for Natural Environment, spent the day enjoying the event and talking with CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher and CLA Deputy President William Worsley.
After a lunch meeting with the CLA President and Deputy President and a tour of the site, Mr Irranca-Davies said: "It has been a fantastic and great experience seeing the diversity of everything that happens at The CLA Game Fair.
"It is great for those who work on the land and in the countryside and also those who are simply interested in it."
Mr Irranca-Davies clearly loved his tour of the enormous country event at Belvoir Castle, in Leicestershire.
At the CLA Diversification Stand, he was given a briefing on the CLA's CALM calculator, which enables farmers and landowners to work out the carbon impact of their rural businesses.
The Minister said: "It is very good project – it's interesting to learn about the development of the CALM project."
And Mr Irranca-Davies expressed his support for the CLA's recently launched Forestry and Woodland document, Seeing the Wood for the Trees. He said that in terms of offsetting carbon emissions, the woodlands had been ignored for too long and were "staring us in the face".
CLA President Henry Aubrey-Fletcher said: "It was a real pleasure to spend this time with the Minister at The CLA Game Fair. He clearly enjoyed his visit and showed interest in everything that was going on. We are grateful to him for coming and showing such great enthusiasm."
The Minister and the CLA President also visited the CLA's Food Initiative Stand, an eco-house made out straw bales and lime rendering, and stands run by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, Sporting Estates and the National Gamekeepers' Organisation among others – and even took a peek at ferret handling.
